Michael B. Ranke was born 1943 in Stettin/Germany. He has studied medicine at the German Universities of Köln, Freiburg and Hamburg, where he graduated in 1968. He is a certified pediatrician since 1976 and professor of paediatrics since 1988. He had received his speciality training in Pediatric Endocrinology in Tübingen (Germany) and at Children´s Hospital of Philadelphia (USA). He was head of the Section of Paediatric Endocrinology  in Tübingen from 1991 to 2008. He has a wide experience in paediatrics and in clinical and research-based endocrinology. His research in endocrinology is focussed on growth, growth hormone treatment and the IGF-IGFBP-System. His major achievements are the development of disease-specific growth references, of algorithms for the optimisation and individualisation of GH treatment and the standardisation in pediatric endocrinology. He served as a member of ESPE council (1984-1987), as the Chairman of German Paediatric Endocrine Society (APE) (1985-1990) and as the chief editor of Hormone Research (1996-2003). He was awarded the ESPE Andrea Prader Prize in 2003.
