Mark A Sperling

Mark A Sperling is Emeritus Professor and Chair of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh and currently Professorial Lecturer in Pediatric Endocrinology at Mt Sinai Hospital in NY. A graduate of the University of Melbourne (1962), he trained in Pediatrics at Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and in Pediatric Endocrinology at Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh. He held academic positons at UCLA in Los Angeles(1970-78),Univ. of Cincinnati (1978-88) and in Pittsburgh (1989-2014) where he was Vira Heinz Chair (1989-2001).His research focused on the hormonal regulation of glucose metabolism with emphasis on the roles of insulin, glucagon and growth hormone and their receptors, including the first model and studies of tissue-specific deletion of the GHR. He is founding editor of Pediatric Diabetes, the official journal of the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes, as well as the Editor of the textbook Pediatric Endocrinology. He has served as President of the Pediatric Endocrine Society and on various editorial boards and NIH study sections, including the National Diabetes Advisory Board. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and Association of American Physicians and was the recipient of the ISPAD prize (2012).He and his spouse Vera R Sperling MD make their home in NY.
